Path of Exile Item Upgrading
Item upgrading allows players to enhance their weapons and gear by adding new affixes, increasing its base stats or giving additional benefits. To upgrade items, players must have the item in their inventory and access the kiln.
Items with weak bases, such as rings, can be upgraded into a stronger base. Items with strong bases, such as eth Titans have little changes in their stats.
Upgrade components
Upgrade components can be slotted into trinkets, armor, weapons and gathering tools, providing an attribute bonus or additional effect when the equipment is used. They can be purchased from vendors, or found in loot, thrown away by enemies, or obtained as rewards from missions or chests. Certain upgrades can also be equipped with special cosmetic effects. Most upgrades require the equipment to be above a certain point before they can be upgraded.
To upgrade the quality of a weapon, armor or other item in the game, players will have to select it and then click on the Upgrade button in the toolbar. The screen will show on the right-hand side of the screen a preview that shows the expected upgrade stats as well as the components or materials required for the upgrade.
There are three types of upgrade components that are universal upgrades, prefix upgrades, and suffix upgrades. Universal upgrades, which are made up of gems, are able to be used in any kind of equipment and provide smaller bonuses than upgrade components that are restricted to a specific type. Infusions are only placed in gear that is ascended and legendary equipment are similar to gems, but offer higher bonuses and are not able to be placed in any other equipment. Suffix upgrades can be added to gathering tools. They will add the suffix to the end of item names. For instance the addition of a Glyph will transform the staff wrapping of Minor Vigor a Canthan staff wrapping of Minor Vigor.
In the instance of upgrades for gathering tools when a player swaps one glyph with another the old glyph will be returned to the inventory. However, replacing any other upgrade component will damage it, excluding inscribed glyphs that can be swapped.
Leveling
The upgrade system in Path of Exile has some important variations from the previous versions. Gear is now divided into tracks and items can only be upgraded a specific number of times before they're "leveled out." The cost for upgrades increases with each level up however, the materials needed aren't as high. This allows players to focus their efforts on a select few items and maximize the impact of those items rather than spreading the cost of upgrades across several pieces.

Prior to this, some upgrades were given priority affixes which made them easier to roll. It meant that you'd get the stats most important to your build more frequently than other items. This included stats like armor's total armour, thorns, and control impaired duration reduced stats or the weapons' bonus attack speed and crit strike chance.
This has changed since the most recent patch. Priority affixes are no longer required and all upgrades will have the same chances of rolling for every stat. This can be a great or a negative thing depending on your requirements and expectations from your equipment.
Each upgraded item could come with a unique, fixed-value bonus that increases its power by a certain percentage. These bonuses are added to standard affixes. The more you upgrade a product, the greater your chances of receiving a unique bonus.
The game also comes with number set that grants the player a bonus if three or four upgraded items from the set are placed on an unit. This is a good method to give the character more power without spending a ton of money.
Many players reroll their weapons and gear particularly in the beginning stages. Rerolling is a method to create a more powerful character quicker, which enables you to advance in the game and achieve higher levels.
Sets
Sets are collections that can be set up in different ways. They could be of various sizes, have no elements, or only contain a single element. This will also boost the defense of armor with a newer appearance.
